Warden Cathy Burghardt-Jesson Canada Day

Today, we gather here in Middlesex County to celebrate Canada, the remarkable nation we call home. On this day, we reflect on the rich history, cultural diversity, and shared values that make our nation unique and vibrant.

We acknowledge that the land we stand upon today is the traditional territory of the Attawandaron, Anishinabeg, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapeewak peoples who have long standing relationships to the land, water and region of Southwestern Ontario. The local First Nation communities of this area include Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, Oneida Nation of the Thames First Nation, and Munsee-Delaware Nation.

We acknowledge the treaties that are specific to this area: Treaty 2 (McKee Purchase), Treaty 3 (Between the Lakes Purchase), Treaty 6 (London Township Purchase), Treaty 21 (Long Woods Purchase) and Treaty 29 (Huron Tract Purchase).

We value the significant contributions, both in the past and the present of local and regional first nations of Turtle Island.

We acknowledge historic and ongoing injustices that indigenous peoples endure in Canada and we affirm our commitment to honouring indigenous voices, nations and cultures, and to moving forward in the spirit of reconciliation and respect.

Lester B Pearson so famously said about the privilege of living in Canada: whether we live together in confidence and cohesion; with more faith and pride in ourselves and less self-doubt and hesitation; strong in the conviction that the destiny of Canada is to unite, not divide; sharing in cooperation, not in separation or in conflict; respecting our past and welcoming our future.

We are a country of acceptance, cooperation with a respected history of unity.  We see that in Middlesex County.

Middlesex County is home to a tapestry of vibrant and thriving communities, each contributing its unique essence to the rich cultural fabric of our nation. We are fortunate to be surrounded by communities filled with generosity, compassion, and a strong sense of belonging. Our local initiatives and collective efforts demonstrate the true spirit of Canada, where neighbors support one another, lend a helping hand in times of need, and foster a welcoming environment for all who call this place home.

By cherishing our communities and nurturing the bonds that connect us, we can continue to shape a future that is prosperous, inclusive, and brimming with possibilities. Let us renew our commitment to build a better and brighter nation for generations to come. Together, we can create a society where everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed and thrive.

I extend my warmest wishes to all the residents of Middlesex County. May we continue to work hand in hand, shoulder to shoulder, as we build a future that reflects the true essence of our remarkable communities. Happy Canada Day!
