Middlesex County Warden’s Statement on Canada Day

MIDDLESEX COUNTY: On September 30, 2024, Warden Aina DeViet issued the following statement regarding the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

“At Middlesex County, we acknowledge the historic and ongoing injustices that indigenous peoples endure in Canada and we affirm our commitment to honouring indigenous voices, nations and cultures, and to moving forward in the spirit of reconciliation and respect.

We acknowledge that the land we live on today is the traditional territory of the Attawandaron, Anishinabeg, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapeewak peoples who have long-standing relationships to the land, water and region of Southwestern Ontario.

The local First Nation communities of this area include Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, Oneida Nation of the Thames First Nation, and Munsee-Delaware Nation.

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we acknowledge the profound impact that residential schools have had on Indigenous peoples across Canada.

Events, activities, and gatherings across the country, will function to raise awareness and encourage all Canadians to engage in meaningful reflection. Education and learning open the door to understanding, and by honouring survivors and their stories, we take a step towards reconciliation.

I encourage everyone in Middlesex County to take part in these opportunities, to understand the true history of our country, to listen to the stories of Indigenous peoples, and to consider how we can support the healing process within our communities.

The County of Middlesex is committed to advancing truth, justice and reconciliation. Reconciliation is the responsibility of every Canadian. It means acknowledging the past and ensuring history never repeats itself by respecting Indigenous treaties and rights and by letting go of negative perceptions and stereotypes.

Together, we can create a more compassionate and informed future.”
