Joint Middlesex County 2026 Election Compliance Audit Committee

Joint Middlesex County 2026 Election Compliance Audit Committee

The eight local municipalities in Middlesex County are forming the Joint Middlesex County 2026 Election Compliance Audit Committee for the upcoming municipal election cycle. Under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, municipalities must establish a Municipal Election Compliance Audit Committee to independently review audit applications regarding election campaign finances and contributions.

The Committee will:

  • Review a request from a voter claiming that a candidate or registered third party broke the Municipal Elections Act rules about campaign finances, and decide whether to approve or reject the request.
  • If the application is granted, appoint an auditor to conduct a compliance audit and deliver a report.
  • Review the auditor’s findings and decide whether to start legal proceedings against the candidate or registered third party if the report suggests that Municipal Elections Act campaign finance rules were broken.
  • Review reports from municipal Clerks that list contributors who may have given more than the allowed amount under section 88.9 or 88.13 of the Municipal Elections Act, and decide whether to start legal action against those contributors if a violation appears to have occurred.

The Committee will serve the same as the term of office of Council, from November 15, 2026 to November 14, 2030. The Committee will serve for any by-election that may take place during that time.

Committee applications are now closed.
