Middlesex 2046 - Housing

The housing market is changing rapidly in Middlesex County and across Ontario.  Residential development is occurring at a much higher rate than in the past, and housing purchase prices and rental costs are increasing faster than household incomes.  Residents have reported that lack of affordable and rental housing are pressing issues in the County.  Businesses have reported that a lack of housing options is impacting their ability to attract and retain a talented workforce.

To address these issues, Middlesex County is considering the following changes within its Official Plan:

  • Encourage alternatives to single-detached housing.  Options include townhouses, rowhouses, apartments, and tiny homes.  The County is also considering additional residential units both within existing dwellings and within backyards for a total of three dwelling units on one property.
  • Promote housing that is more accessible for first time home buyers, renters, and seniors.

In addition to modernizing related policies in the Official Plan, Middlesex County is implementing a Homelessness Prevention and Housing Plan.  Middlesex County will also be undertaking an Attainable Housing Review that will identify gaps in the provision of housing and corresponding strategies for attainable housing with an emphasis on the factors that Middlesex County and its partners can influence concerning the development of attainable housing at a local level.  Please use the online form below to subscribe to learn about opportunities to get involved.
