“Welcome to the beautiful trails of Middlesex County! As you embark on your outdoor adventures, we invite you to enjoy the stunning natural landscapes and diverse wildlife. Middlesex County proudly owns and manages the County Forest, encompassing 1,040 hectares (2,500 acres) across 27 tracts. These areas include the Dorchester Swamp, the Big Swamp, and the Skunk’s Misery / Bothwell Forest Complex.

Please see below the activities that are allowed and prohibited in the County Forest. To keep everyone's experience safe and enjoyable, please follow all posted rules and regulations. Your cooperation helps maintain the beauty and quality of our trails. When crossing major roads, be sure to look both ways and watch for traffic. Your safety is our top priority.

All Middlesex County forestry signs are in accordance with the County Woodland Bylaw under section 135 of the Municipal Act.

 Hiking 

  • Discover the beauty of Middlesex County through our extensive network of hiking trails. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or just looking for a leisurely walk, our trails offer something for everyone.
  • While hiking is a wonderful way to connect with nature, it's important to stay safe and be prepared. Here are some essential tips and cautions to keep in mind:

    • Stay on Marked Trails: Always follow designated paths to protect both yourself and the environment.
    • Wear Appropriate Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots or shoes are recommended to navigate uneven terrain.
    • Bring Sufficient Water: Stay hydrated, especially on longer hikes or during hot weather.
    • Check the Weather: Be aware of current weather conditions and plan your hike accordingly. Avoid hiking during severe weather.
    • Watch for Wildlife: While our wildlife is generally safe, it's important to respect their space and observe from a distance.
    • Pack Out What You Pack In: Help us keep the trails clean by taking all your trash with you.
    • Inform Someone of Your Plans: Let someone know your hiking route and expected return time.
    • Be Mindful of Trail Conditions: Some trails may be muddy or slippery after rain, so proceed with caution.

  • Our trails offer a wonderful opportunity for horseback riding, allowing you to explore scenic routes and enjoy the natural surroundings. Please remember to ride responsibly by staying on designated equestrian trails and following all posted guidelines.

  • As you glide through the serene beauty, please stay on designated trails and respect all posted signs and guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

  • To ensure a safe and pleasant experience for everyone, please keep your dog on a leash and clean up after them, stoop and scoop in effect. 
Cycling

  • As you navigate through lush forests and along picturesque routes, please remember to ride responsibly and follow all trail rules to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
  • The key to protecting trails while biking is to stick to the original track and avoid any shortcuts. This means no cutting corners or diverting trails.

  • Hunting as regulated by MNRF is permitted in those woodlots owned by the County of Middlesex.

Prohibited

 To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all vehicles, please be aware that all vehicles are prohibited in all County-owned forests. 

No Motorcycles

 Motorcycles 

  • Motorcycles are not permitted on Middlesex County trails. This policy helps protect our natural landscapes and maintain a peaceful environment for hikers, cyclists, and wildlife enthusiasts.
No open fires

 Open fires 

  • Open fires are strictly prohibited on Middlesex County trails. This includes campfires, bonfires, and any other type of open flame. Help us protect our beautiful landscapes and wildlife by adhering to this important rule.
Camping

 Camping 

  • Camping is not permitted in Middlesex County woodlands. This policy is in place to ensure the safety and enjoyment of our parks for everyone, as well as to protect our natural environments.

  • Overnight stays, including the use of tents, campers, or any form of shelter, are prohibited.
  • Fires and cooking equipment are not allowed.
No littering

 Littering 

  • Littering is strictly prohibited in Middlesex County woodlands. Keeping our forests clean and beautiful is a shared responsibility, and we need your help to protect our natural environment.
  • ​​​​​Dispose of all trash in designated bins. If you bring items with you, please take them home if no trash bins are available.
  • Recycle appropriate materials in designated recycling bins to help reduce waste.
  • Please clean up after your pets, stoop and scoop in effect. 
No ATV

 ATV

  • Use of All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) is strictly prohibited in Middlesex County woodlands to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all visitors, as well as the preservation of our natural environment.
  • ATVs can travel at high speeds and have the potential to cause accidents, posing significant risks to other trail users such as hikers, cyclists, and families with children.
  • The operation of ATVs can lead to soil erosion, compaction, and disruption of plant life. These vehicles can also disturb wildlife habitats,
No snowmobile

 Snowmobile 

  • Use of snowmobiles is strictly prohibited in Middlesex County and can pose significant hazards to trail users, wildlife, and delicate ecosystems.
  • Even through snow, these vehicles can harm plant life and compact soil, affecting vegetation growth and animal habitats.
  • Snowmobiles can cause significant wear and tear on our trails, leading to more frequent and costly maintenance.
No RV

 Recreational Vehicles (RVs)

  • Use of RVs (Recreational Vehicles) is strictly prohibited in Middlesex County. The size and weight of RVs can create safety hazards in woodlands and can obstruct pathways and restrict access for the public.
  • RVs also contribute to pollution through emissions and waste disposal issues.
No off roading

 Automobiles

  • Use of any automobiles is strictly prohibited. Motor vehicles can create significant safety hazards for pedestrians, cyclists, and other non-motorized users of public spaces.
  • The weight and movement of vehicles can deteriorate trail surfaces, leading to increased maintenance needs and potential trail closures.
